Experiment 4 - The Potentiometer as a Voltage Divider

Quite analogous to voltage dividers consisting of fixed resistors, you can use the potentiometer as a voltage divider. The wiper divides the potentiometer into two resistors, one part, seen from the wiper connected to the positive terminal of the battery and the second part connected to the negative terminal.

Consider the circuit shown. A voltage of 9 V is applied to the total resistance of the potentiometer. When mesuring the voltage at the wiper, you recognize that you can adjust the voltage between 0 V and 9 V continuously.
