In the early 1960s, the first red light-emitting diodes were developed. First they were among the exotic components, until in the 1970s the industrial production of LEDs became reality. Quickly LEDs were developed further, and new colors made them interesting for an increasing number of applications in display technology.

In recent years the development of LEDs has focused to increase the light intensity. In this way they start to replace traditional light sources.

Here you can learn how LEDs function in an electric circuit. However, it does not explain how a LED works interally. This topic is discussed in "LED" in the section semiconductor physics.

In this first part you get to know the LED. In simple circuits, you discover the main properties and recognize how LEDs are used.

The second part (Go on...) describes in more detail applications of LEDs and the different components, where LEDs are incorporated.
